MIL-S-58112
I
4.8.1 Forging Integrity. One forging from each heat treat lot shall be
I
sectioned for the purpose of preparing tensile test specimens by the
supplier. At least two specimens shall be taken and machined to conform
to the largest types described in ASTM E8M, Figure 8, which can be
accommodated. The supplier shall identify the location on the parent
forging from which the marked specimens are taken in a sketch. One
specimen shall be parallel to forging flow direction and second at another
identifiable angle. Conformance to strength requirements stated in apex
fitting and grab hook drawings shall be accomplished in supplier performed
tensile tests. Acceptability shall be documented in supplier
certiftcation of material composition and strength.
4.8.2 Hardness testing. Samples shall be selected from each lot of
steel sling components including shackle forgings, grab book, grab book
keepers and sling pins as required in paragraph 4.8 herein and subject to
hardness testing after heat treatment in an area to be subsequently
removed by machining. Acceptable hardness is stated on the respective
detail drawings.
4.9 Non-destructive examination. Each steel shackle, grab hook and
sling pin shall be magnetic particle prior to cadmium plating using
methods of MIL-I-6868 and acceptance criteria of AA-STD-1. Each aluminum
alloy shackle shall be fluorescent penetrant inspected prior to anodizing
using methods of MIL-STD-6866 and acceptance criteria of AA-STD-2.
Failure to satisfy these criteria shall result in single part rejection.
4.10 Examination of end item. The sample unit for the examination shall
be one sling or one sling component. The classification of defects shall
be as set forth in Table III.
4.11 Inspection levels and acceptable quality levels (AQLs) for end
item examination. Inspection Level II shall be in accordance with
MIL-STD-105. AQLs, expressed in defects per 100 units, shall be as
follows:
a. For major defects indicated in Table III except for prof loads
tests, AQL = 1.0.
b.
For minor defects indicated in Table III, AQL = 4.0
